Nichols began his career as an artist under the tutelage of Simon Michael of Rockport. A beginner student, yet possessing much interest and enthusiasm, Michael served him well for many years. His instruction and inspiration first in oil painting led Nichols to explore other painting mediums and to engage himself in various sculpture mediums. He is a prolific painter believing his best work results from quick yet relaxed applications of paint. Common to beginning students he was seduced by the false notion that to be a good artist, and willing to pay most any price so to be, required tedious and timid applications of paint. Not so, for boldness achieved through deliberative strokes results in impact, sometimes at the loss of hallowed form, but nevertheless achieving more net success, if such decision must be made. The old adage that more successes in painting are accidental than those planned has validity. His knowledge about ranch life in West Texas provides a foundation for authenticity reflected in his ranch scenes. Though ranch subjects are frequently used in his work by no means is his subject matter restricted. Acknowledging that his gratitude extends to many others who have influenced his career, those prominent in his memory in addition to Michael are: Harold Phenix, Clay McGaughey, Buck Shiwetz, Charles Schorre, Tom Jones, and Ann Armstrong, |
