Margaret Ann DeSmet was born in 1915 in Rock Island, Illinois. Her parents
were immigrants from Belgium and process at Ellis Island, New York. She
grew up on a farm near Moline, Illinois and spent most of her youth in
that area. When Margaret was 12, her mother died and she was sent to
France to attend a Catholic boarding school.
After graduating
from high school, Margaret became a Civil Service secretary. She married
Merle Elmer Rouillard, a sergeant in the Army, and traveled the world
with him. Her daughter Merle E. was born in 1951 and has been a resident
of Liberty Hill for the past twenty-one years.

about and photograph animals, touring Hawaii, Alaska, California, Yellowstone
National Park, Glacier National Park, and many other places in North
America. She toured Kenya twice, always taking beautiful pictures of
animals and gathering ideas for her paintings. She did chalk, pen and
ink, watercolor, and oils. Her last paintings were mostly of African
animals, especially ones that are endangered.
Margaret
was a member of numerous art organizations in San Antonio and many
local, national, and international animal groups. She died in 2001
at the age of 86 after a long battle with Alzheimers. Her husband died
soon after with the same affliction.
